Off to Durban

Out of Tembe and onto a 4 hour drive to Durban on the east coast of South Africa.  We are after warmer temps and a beach.  Of course there are always stops along the way including catching these ladies.  We just have to learn how to carry stuff on our heads like this.  Everywhere we go we find woman walking along the road carrying everything on their heads including buckets of water, sacks of mealies (corn), firewood, clothing.  I'm going to get a picture of Lisa doing this before the trip is over.

Of course a drive would not be complete without finding some more kids to give some Happy Factory toys to.

Once you get into Kwazulu-Natal you start driving through miles and miles of sugar cane farms that never seem to end.  My kids are going to experience chewing and sucking on sugar cane - a tradition we had as kids when we vacationed down this way.

Fruit stands along the road became a common site.  This young man sold us some pineapples.  He said he was raising money to help pay his school fees so that he could finish high school.

So there are many fabulous homes and neighborhoods in South Africa, and some not so hot.  You can tell that these people have gathered whatever they could to create basic shelters.

We arrived at the house we have rented on Saturday afternoon.  The first order of business was to head to the grocery store to shop for food for the next week.  Here is a look at the ocean from our back yard.  I think that's Andersen sitting on the steps that go down to the beach.
